Central has a long tradition of the importance of its music program. A former Director of Music, Dale Harpham, subsequently went on to direct the Marine Band. Erhard Thiel became Director of Music in the l960’s. During the 50’s and 60’s there was a large adult choir, in addition to a youth choir. On special occasions these choirs would all sing together. An outgrowth of the choir known as the Mountainaires used to go and perform at the nursing home Ther Hermitage and other rehab places. The choir used to also go caroling on a regular basis each Christmas to tcal nursing homes and shut ins. Catherine Thiel was Organist for many years. Often the choir spanned many generations. This tradition continues today as well – there are many people in Central’s Chancel Choir today who are either long-standing members or offspring of long-standing members.
Barbara Peterson Cackler became Interim Organist in September of 1998, replacing Catherine Thiel, whose hip injuries prevented her from climbing down into the organ pit. In September of 1999, Barbara assumed responsibilities as Director of Music/Organist. Since that time, the choir has experienced a renaissance and a real growth in membership.
Our choir rehearses on Sunday mornings from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. The choir presents a Christmas Cantata annually, usually on either the 3rd or 4th Sunday in Advent. We are on a journey together to learn how to sing to glorify God, but also how to enjoy one another’s fellowship as we explore new music.
