Save the Date:  Saturday, February 9, 2013 Volunteer:
For Two Hours (or Four or Six Hours)!
Save the Life of a Child

On Saturday, February 9, 2013, CUMC will host over 200 church and community volunteers with the goal of preparing 20,000 packets of Oral Rehydration Salts to be used for children suffering from dehydration in refugee camps, areas of civil unrest and poverty, and where natural disasters have struck.  1.5 million children a year will die from dehydration and 80% of the victims are under 2 years old.

The website of the World Health Organization states:  “ORS (Oral Rehydration Salts) use is the simplest, most effective and cheapest way to keep children alive during severe episodes of diarrhea.”

Oral Rehydration Salts are a mixture of sugar, non-iodized salt, potassium (salt substitute), and baking soda.  These measured ingredients are put in a self-sealable packet, boxed, and sent to a central warehouse in Michigan.  As relief agencies need the ORS packets they are shipped out to them.

Free parking is available at the following garage (about 2.5 blocks from the church).  If you are carpooling and you want to drop passengers at the church, from Fairfax Drive turn left onto Stafford Street, and the parking lot for the church will be immediately on your left.  The entrance to Fellowship Hall is just off the parking lot and will be marked, and the church elevator is located 20 feet to the right of that entrance. You will push the elevator button marked “B” and follow the signs to Fellowship Hall.

NRECA Parking Garage Address:  4301 Wilson Blvd.

Directions to Garage:  Enter from Taylor Street (between Fairfax and Wilson).  From Wilson, turn onto Taylor street and the ramp into the garage will be just on your left.  From Fairfax  Drive, turn south onto Taylor (toward Wilson) and go just past the “Jefferson.” You will see the ramp on your right.

Garage Hours:  The parking garage gates will be open from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm for our volunteers.  No permit is necessary.  (It is ok if the 9 am – 11 am volunteers arrive at church a bit late because of this opening time.)

IMPORTANT:  Your car must be out of the garage by 4 pm or it will be locked in until Monday morning!

To get to Central United Methodist Church from the garage:

Come out of the garage and turn left.  Walk to first crosswalk (Fairfax Drive), turn right.  The church is two blocks ahead of you on the left.  Go to the back of the church—the Fellowship Hall entrance is off the parking lot—there will be signs.
